Biblical Foundations for the Christian Faith: Paul Washer Study Series

Like many millennials, I first discovered Paul Washer on YouTube with his now infamous “I’m Talking About You!” sermon. If you haven’t had the sobering experience, please visit here and enjoy (and/or repent). Afterwards, I heard him speak while watching American Gospel: Christ Alone which is a film that I highly recommend. It impacted my walk with the Lord greatly and is such an invaluable tool in correction and the edification of the church.

A little about Paul Washer from the HeartCry website:

Paul Washer ministered as a missionary in the jungles of Peru for a over a decade, during which time he founded HeartCry Missionary Society to support Peruvian church planters. Paul now serves as Executive Director of HeartCry. He and his wife, Charo, have four children: Ian, Evan, Rowan and Bronwyn.

And, from my own perspective, the Lord has greatly used Mr. Washer in the purification of the Church. I’ve heard countless people say that the Lord used one of his sermons to convict them of their sins (myself included) and it is clear from his speaking and his writing that he deeply desires for the church to get serious and fully submit their lives to the Lord.

When I was asked by our Pastor to help with a ladies ministry, I began our search for curriculum that wasn’t fluffy or shallow. That is when I found that Paul Washer has a series called Biblical Foundations for the Christian Faith. I ordered Discovering the Glorious Gospel and gave a copy to our Pastor. While going through the book I was amazed at the depth, theological literacy and accesiblity of the study! As someone who deeply desires for women to be gospel central and fluent theologically, this study (and the series as a whole) aided in that goal.

I will say, however, that it is a lot of reading; especially for people who may not be used the sheer amount of reading and notetaking involved. That is most definitely not to say do not do the series, but something to be mindful of when breaking down the series into weekly work; I fear that maybe my zeal of finding such a treasure threw people into the deep end of the pool and had to adjust the workload a b

I also did two of the books with a discipleship group I am a part of. The four of us absolutely love the workload and depth. It was fantastic for our weekly discussions. I specifically like that while there are notes to guide you in the book, it is mainly open ended and focuses on encouraging the reader to do the work and search the Scriptures herself; no spoon-feeding here!

Biblical Foundations for the Christian Faith includes:

I still have to go through two of the books, but if they are anything like the other three, then I am sure that I will be greatly blessed by them!

I encourage you to go through them with a small group, but if you do not have a group of ladies to do this study with, I still highly encourage the series for your private reading time!
